The California Pacific Conference, along with the NAIA, CSA and ASA believe in the value of providing one day-off per week, during each team’s defined play and practice season. We feel this policy would be in the best interest of each student-athlete, along with their overall student-athlete experience, their physical and emotional health, academic success, and personal/interpersonal well-being. In accordance to this mandatory day-off proposal, La Sierra University student-athletes receive the Sabbath, as a day of rest. The Sabbath is considered to be the time period from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset (a 24-hour period), and is regarded with reverence as the sign of God’s creative and redeeming power. During this time, all students are encouraged to enter into an attitude of worship, praise, and rejuvenation. Student-athletes are restricted, on the Sabbath, from team or individual sports specific meetings, discussions of strategy, or other training. Communication with the coach, teammates, athletic department and sports medicine department is allowed. However, student-athletes are not allowed to practice, compete, or participate in representing the institution in their respective sport. These restrictions apply to an entire team and may be adjusted for an individual member. The aforementioned restrictions are communicated beforehand and begin when student-athletes arrive on campus, and govern their weekly schedule whether they are in-season or in their off-season.
