Pasadena, CA - Playing in their home opener, the Cal Tech Beavers hosted the Golden Eagles tonight in Pasadena, California. Lay Sierra played the role of spoiler and overcame a tough shooting first half, pulling away in the second half with a 58-44 win.

Both teams struggled on the offensive side of the floor throughout the night, setting up a classic defensive battle. The home team converted on eight of 28 attempts in the first half. Seven of the eight make field goals came from beyond the arc. The second half proved to be much of the same for Cal Tech who shot 22-percent, hitting seven of 31 attempts, and finishing with a shooting percentage of 25-percent for the game.

The Golden Eagles shot slightly better at 36-percent for the game. They hit nine of their 27 attempts in the first half and 14-of-36 in the second half including five for 11 from beyond the arc.

It was a 15-2 second half run, that pushed the lead to 48-36, with just over seven minutes to play that capped the victory for La Sierra. The Beavers were able to cut the lead to eight points, 48-40, with less than four minutes to play, but that would be as close as they would get.

Isaiah Hawkins led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 16 points to along with eight rebounds. Bennett Shaw added 13 points in the effort.

The Beavers won the battle on the boards 48-43. They finished with 19 offensive turnovers to the Golden Eagles 16.

With the win , the Golden Eagles push their record to 1-5 on the season. After taking a couple of days off for the Thanksgiving holiday, they will jump back into action on Saturday night when they travel to Biola University. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm. Their next home game will take place on December 8 against Menlo College.
