Bobcats Pull Upset Victory Over Golden Eagles

Riverside, Calif. - The women's volleyball team dropped their semifinal match, 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 26-24), to the University of California Merced, bringing their 2014 season to an end.

The Bobcats, the No. 4 seed pulled the upset by knocking of the No. 1 seeded Golden Eagles on their home court.

From the get-go it was UC Merced who played much more relaxed, resulting in an early 11-3 lead, in Set 1. The Bobcats held a comfortable lead throughout the match, on their way to taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

After building a 17-10 lead, the Bobcats hung on to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. Merced was able to withstand a 7-1 run by the Golden Eagles, who cut the lead to 18-17, but that's as close as they would get.

In Set 3, it was La Sierra who jumped out to the early 5-0 lead and never looked back. The Golden Eagles led from start to finish, cruising to their lone set win of the match.

The Golden Eagles quickly found themselves in a 4-0 deficit right out of the gates, in Set 4, but they quickly erased the deficit, catching the Bobcats at 5-5. The remainder of the match was a tight back-and-forth affair. La Sierra was finally able to creep out to a 21-18 lead, but the Bobcats wouldn't be denied.

Trailing 24-22, the Bobcats fought off two set points by the Golden Eagles, and scored the final four points of the set and win the match 3-1.

The loss denied the Golden Eagles their second straight trip to the Cal Pac Championship match, and a re-match of last year's final, where they eventually fell to Menlo College.

Lina Semaia and Robyn Miller finished out their collegiate careers by collecting 20 kills and 19 kills respectively. Erin Miller pitched in 12 kills, 15 digs, and four block assists.

Semaia also added 10 digs on the evening, while R. Miller added 22 digs, three block assists, two aces, and one solo block.

Libero Chantal Washington also closed out her career with a match-high 24 digs. Setter Angie Gonzalez was credited with 47 assists and nine digs.

The season ending loss drops the Golden Eagles to 8-3 in Cal Pac play (9-17 overall). So it will be back to the drawing board for La Sierra who will have their work cut out for them, in their attempt to fill the shoes of R. Miller, Semaia, and Washington.
