Riverside, Calif. - The women's basketball team earned their first win of the season, with a 68-51 defeat of Pomona-PItzer College.
It was their fourth game in six days and the second game of a back-to-back for the Golden Eagles. After a lackluster first half, La Sierra was fortunate to go into the halftime break with a slim 25-24 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer started the second half on a 13-5 run, taking a 37-30 lead five minutes into the half. But the Golden Eagles quickly erased the Sagehens lead with the help of a 14-0 run. During that span, the Golden Eagles held Pomona-Pitzer scoreless for the next seven minutes.
By the final buzzer, La Sierra outscored the Sagehens 38-14 in the final 15:17 of the game.
Tina Fantroy led all scorers with 31 points and 11 rebounds, including 5-of-6 from the three point line. Melanie Henderson added 10 points, while Taylor Johnson finished with seven points of her own.
Faith Fantroy had a game-high nine assists and five steals, in addition to nine rebounds.
The win puts the women's basketball into the win column with a record of 1-5 on the season. They will enjoy a few days off before jumping back into action this coming Tuesday, when they host Eastern Nazarene College (Quincy, Mass.). Tuesday's game is an afternoon affair starting at 3pm.
