Riverside, Calif. - The Golden Eagles men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 68-67 loss to Pacific Union College on Saturday night.
After quickly erasing a three digit deficit (28-25) just minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles held the lead until the Pioneers Greg Brown connected on his eight three-pointer of the game with just 1.3 seconds remaining, to steal the victory.
La Sierra opened that second half with a 13-0 run taking their largest lead of the game at 38-28. But the Pioneers kept the score close and stayed within striking distance, chipping away at La Sierra's lead.
With just six minutes remaining La Sierra's lead was down to two points (57-55), but the Golden Eagles quickly answered with a 6-0 run pushing their lead back to eight points, 63-55, with 3:28 remaining.
The Golden Eagles led 64-58 with :39 seconds remaining were unable to overcome some crucial turnovers and missed free throws in the final minute of the game, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
La Sierra is now 1-14 on the season. They will make their first of three trips to northern California this weekend for two conference games. On Thursday they will face Simpson University (Redding, Calif.) followed by a game at Cal State University Maritime-Academy (Vallejo, Calif.), on Saturday night.
