Santee, Calif. - The Hawks, who were looking to avenge a 3-1 loss to La Sierra, defeated the Golden Eagles in straight sets tonight (25-22, 25-21, 25-19). The non-conference loss drops La Sierra to 5-5 on the season. San Diego Christian improved their record to 9-7 overall.
Midway through Set 1, the Golden Eagles crept out to an 18-14 lead, but the Hawks quickly erased the deficit with a 4-0 run with the help of three hitting errors by the Golden Eagles. They would go on to outscore the La Sierra 7-3 to win Set 1 by a final of 25-22.
The second set was a back and forth affair that consisted of nine lead changes, with neither team holding more than a three point lead during the set. With the score tied at 20-20, the Hawks again outscored the Golden Eagles 5-2 to close out the set, with the help of two service errors by La Sierra.
In Set 3, the Hawks took control early by jumping out to a 7-2 lead. The Golden Eagles fought their way back, tying the score at 13-13. But the Hawks would never relinquish the lead, as they went on to win the set and the match 25-21.
Abby Latuhoi led the team in kills with eight, followed by Caitlin Marino who added seven kills. Samantha Marquez pitched in with six kills, while Erin Miller and Taylor Moran each tallied five kills for La Sierra.
The Hawks defense at the net, forced the Golden Eagles into 22 hitting errors on the night. San Diego Christian finished the match with a total of 13 total blocks compared to three for the Golden Eagles.
Tonight's match was the first of six straight matches on the road for the women's volleyball team. They will travel to Arizona this coming weekend to face Benedictine-Mesa and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The match against Benedictine, an incoming member of the conference, will be treated as a non-conference match, played on Friday afternoon. The team will follow things up with a conference match against Embry-Riddle on Saturday night.
