La Verne, Calif. - The Golden Eagles women's basketball team won their second straight by defeating the University of La Verne 64-61. La Sierra outscored the Leopards 17-9 on second chance points and were able to escape a tough night from the free throw line with the narrow victory.
In the opening quarter the two teams played virtually even, exchanging their share of runs, with the Golden Eagles winning the quarter by a slim 13-12 margin. The Golden Eagles quickly pushed their lead to 25-14 with the help of a 12-2 run, over a span of three minutes, to start the second quarter. The Leopards answered with an 11-5 run, cutting the lead to 35-29 by the half time break.
With 3:07 left to play in the third quarter the Leopards converted a lay-up, tying the score at 41-41. By the end of the quarter the two teams remained locked in a 48-48 tie.
La Verne started the final quarter with an 8-0 run over the first 3:30 of the quarter. But the Golden Eagles answered the bell, holding the Leopards scoreless over the next six minutes of play and outscoring La Verne 14-0 in that span. La Verne was able to score five point in the final minute and had a few chances to tie and/or take the lead in the final minute of play, but the Golden Eagles were able to hang on for the win.
Alexis Davis came off the bench to lead the team with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting, with seven rebounds. Rachel Hahn and Kailee Maeda each contributed 13 points, while Afolake Akingba had a monster night on the boards, leading all players with 17 rebounds to go along with eight points.
The women's basketball team pushed their record to 2-8 on the season. They will play an exhibition game versus Bristol University on Friday afternoon, followed by a Sunday afternoon match-up with Cal Tech, on the road.
