Softball Drops Doubleheader To Whittier

Riverside, Calif. - Whittier College won both games of today's softball doubleheader over the Golden Eagles, 15-3 and 7-1. Looking to rebound after Friday's tightly contested losses at Biola, the Golden Eagles entered today's games looking for their first win of the season. Unfortunately for La Sierra, the two losses drop the team to 0-10 on the season.

The Poets bats were alive early and often in Game 1, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead in the second inning. The Golden Eagles got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning and cut the lead to 6-3 with a run in the fourth inning.

But leading 9-3, the Poets really broke the game open with six runs in the seventh inning. They finished the game with 15 runs on 17 total hits. The Golden Eagles tallied their three runs on four hits.

Catcher Brianna Gutierrez went 2-for-2 and had both of La Sierra's RBI's.

The Poets were in control in Game 2, holding the lead from the second inning on. Whittier held a 7-0 advantage until the Golden Eagles broke through for their lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking up the shutout bid.

For the second consecutive game the Poets finished in double digits in hits, tallying 10 hits in the game. La Sierra totaled six hits in Game 2, led by Mercedes Gasparovic (2-for-3) and Brittany Martinez (2-for-3). Martinez had the only RBI of the game for La Sierra.

The team will return to action next Sunday when they travel to the University of Antelope Valley (Lancaster, Calif.). Their next home games will take place on Wednesday, February 18, when they play host to Hope International University.
