Riverside, Calif. - Playing their second day of consecutive doubleheaders, the Golden Eagles dropped both games 10-6 and 8-4, against Martin Methodist College (Tenn.). The two losses drop La Sierra to 4-17 on the season.
Both teams had the bats working for both contests, with each team collecting more than 10 hits in each game.
Brianna Gutierrez tallied four of the Golden Eagles 12 hits in Game 1, while Berlyn Benavides finished the game going 2-for 4. Genifer Garbellini led the team with two RBI's, going 1-for-3 in the game. The Red Hawks had four players who collected at least two hits in the game, for a total of 13 hits.
Martin Methodist took a commanding 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, never to look back. The Golden Eagles answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning but were never able to erase the lead. In the fifth inning, La Sierra scored three runs to cut the lead to 8-6, but that would be as close as things would get.
In Game 2, La Sierra scored first with two runs in the third inning, only to have their 2-0 lead erased, as the Red Hawks scored seven runs over the next two innings.
Each team tallied a total of 10 hits in the game, with the Red Hawks leaving a total of 10 runners on base, compared to nine for the Golden Eagles. La Sierra also stranded a total of nine runners in Game 1.
Benavides (3-for-4) and Garbellini (2-for-3) combined for five of the Golden Eagles hits in Game 2. Melanie Vidaurri, Mercedes Gasparovic, and Brittany Martinez each tallied a hit and an RBI in the second game.
La Sierra was scheduled to travel to Cal State San Marcos on Sunday, but a decision has been made to forfeit those contests for the health and well-being of the student-athletes.
