Riverside, Calif. - The women's volleyball team rallied back to take Set 4 and defeat San Diego Christian 3-1 (25-22,25-21,12-25,26-24). Outside hitters, Caitlin Marinos and Samantha Marquez accounted for over half of the Golden Eagles 48 kills. Marinos led all players with 14 kills (.226) and Marquez contributed 11 kills (.368).
After winning the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead in the match, the Golden Eagles lost momentum in Set 3, while the Hawks took the set in convincing fashion, 25-12. With momentum clearly on the side of the Hawks, they jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in Set 4 and held that advantage for the majority of the way and eventually increased their lead to eight points (17-9).
La Sierra chipped away at the Hawks lead and finally caught them at 22-22, with the help of a 13-5 run. San Diego Christian did survive one match point, before Abby Latuhoi's seventh kill of the match secured the 26-24 set victory, and clinching the 3-1 match win. With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Hawks drop to 5-6.
The Golden Eagles were looking to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Hawks, on La Sierra's home court, last season. And while there are many new faces on this year's squad they were well aware that anything can happen when a match goes to five sets. To the team's credit they showed some character in swinging the momentum back to their side of the net and making sure the match didn't go to a fifth set.
Setter Laila Souktani, was recently deemed eligible and played her first match of the season, did a great job leading the offense with 35 assists in addition to a team-high nine digs.
The team will have a week off before starting a frenzy of four matches in four days. All four matches will be played at home and will start with Wednesday's match versus Life Pacific College. A non-conference match, against Menlo College, will follow on Thursday evening, before the week concludes with two conference matches against Simpson University and Pacific Union College, on Friday afternoon and Saturday night, respectively.
NOTE: The postponed match, at Providence Christian College, scheduled to be played this past Saturday night has been rescheduled for October 24, in Pasadena, Calif.
