Prescott, Ariz. - The women's volleyball team dropped their second straight Cal Pac match in a 3-1 loss (25-21, 25-17, 16-25, 25-14) to Embry-Riddle University (Ariz.). The Eagles were looking to avenge a loss to La Sierra in the Cal Pac Championship Tournament last season. Embry-Riddle enters this season as the defending regular season Cal Pac Champions, and remain unbeaten in conference play, at 6-0, atop the Cal Pac standings with Benedictine University who also have a perfect 6-0 record.
The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 3-2 in Cal Pac play (7-7 overall) and it's the first time the team has lost consecutive matches since starting the season 0-4. La Sierra is currently tied with UC Merced for third place in the conference standings, with a showdown set for Saturday night between the two teams.
The Golden Eagles offense was tempered for the second straight match which resulted in a .029 hitting percentage, with only 30 kills, 26 errors, and 137 attempts. Embry-Riddle fared slightly better with 44 kills, 27 errors, on 139 attempts.
Michele Mendizabal had a team-high nine kills, with Taylor Moran and Kiana Krumm adding eight kills and seven kills, respectively.
Smriti Sharma led the team with 12 digs, while Daniella Alvarez finished with 11 digs of her own. Marissa Fregoso and Emily Morgan added nine digs each with Sharma and Fregoso tallying 17 assists and 13 assists, respectively. Krumm also collected eight digs in the match.
Moran led the team with five block assists, followed by Krum who contributed three block assists of her own.
The team will take a break from Cal Pac play with a non-conference match at Chapman University, on Wednesday night, at 7:30pm. The Golden Eagles defeated the Panthers in straight sets, back on October 25. La Sierra will dive back into conference play this weekend with back-to-back matches on Friday (vs University of Antelope Valley) and Saturday (vs UC Merced).
