Riverside, Calif. - On the verge of securing at least one point and heading into extra time, the Golden Eagles were stunned by Soka University who netted a goal in the 90th minute to steal a 1-0 victory, on Thursday evening. The two teams entered the match with identical 3-1 Cal Pac records, but the Lions came out with the victory and are now tied with Antelope Valley for third place in the conference standings.
The match had a feel of a playoff match-up, with both squads understanding the importance it could play as the regular season enters the second half.
Throughout the match, both teams had a handful of scoring opportunities but were unable to penetrate the defense or the opposing goalkeeper. That is until the Lions' Alexander Whyte found his teammate, Jaroslav Zapletal, who found a crease in the Golden Eagles defense to score the only goal of the match.
Aside from the result, it was a relatively evenly played match as the statistics would prove to be the case. Each team finished with a total of four saves. Soka had a slight edge in total shots (10-8), and in shots-on-goal (5-4).
The Golden Eagles will return to the road for their next two matches. Next Saturday, October 15, La Sierra will travel to Providence Christian, followed by a trip to the University of Antelope Valley, on October 20. The Golden Eagles return home on October 23, to host Simpson University in a Cal Pac match.
