Riverside, Calif. - The Golden Eagles women's basketball team picked up their fourth win of the season by defeating the University of La Verne, 71-65, this past Saturday night. La Sierra improves to 4-7, while the Leopards fall to 0-7 on the year. The win also snapped a 4-game losing streak by the Golden Eagles.
La Sierra wasted no time as they quickly jumped all over the Leopard to take a 21-9 lead by the end of the first quarter of play. But La Verne answered back with a strong second quarter, outscoring the Golden Eagles 22-10, as the two teams went into the halftime break tied at 31-31.
The Golden Eagles came into the second half as the aggressors and quickly took control of the game. By the end of the third quarter, the Golden Eagles led 54-45 and that proved to be a lead the Leopards were unable to overcome. On two occasions they cut the Golden Eagles lead to just three points, but La Sierra would hang on for the victory.
They did so behind 24 points from Alexis Davis and Aamanda Sanchez's 15 points and nine rebounds. Guard Deshields Fajardo scored just four points but contributed 10 assists on the night. Forward Mikayla Stitt also factored in with 10 points of her own.
The women's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday night when they travel to Vanguard University. The Lions are currently ranked number six in the nation in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Top-25 rankings. Saturday's game is scheduled for a 7:30pm start.
