Riverside, Calif. - The women's basketball team was defeated, 95-68, by the University of Antelope Valley, in their conference opener on Saturday night. The Golden Eagles were unable to overcome their turnovers and a barrage of shots by the Pioneers who finished with 105 total field goal attempts.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead that they would never relinquish. After the first quarter of play, they led the Golden Eagles 23-13 before the two teams played a relatively even second quarter. But the Pioneers increased their lead in the second half to cruise to victory.
While the Pioneers shot just 31 percent to the Golden Eagles 39 percent, they attempted 34 more shots, including 61 from beyond the three-point line. Half of the Pioneers 33 field goals came from beyond the arc (17/61 – 27% 3FG).
Antelope Valley also outrebounded the Golden Eagles 74-49, including 36 offensive rebounds.
Two players scored in double-figures for the Golden Eagles. Amanda Sanchez led the team with 13 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Alexis Davis notched her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pioneers had four players who scored in double-figures, led by Clarissa Perez who scored a game-high 17 points.
The women's basketball team drops to 0-1 in Cal Pac play (3-6 overall). They will not play another conference game until after the New Year's holiday. The team will be back in action on Tuesday evening when they host Hope International University, at 7pm.
