Riverside, Calif. - Freshmen Kyle Hamilton scored 20 points to lead the Golden Eagles to a 106-78 win over the University of Antelope Valley. The conference victory gives the Golden Eagles sole possession of second place in the Cal Pac standings, with a record of 5-2 (6-14 overall).
Over the first six minutes of play, the two teams went back-and-forth with a total of five ties and three lead changes. But after a Joe McNiff bucket gave the Pioneers a 16-15 lead with 13:33 remaining in the first half, which would prove to be the final lead of the game for Antelope Valley.
Over the final 13 minutes of the half, La Sierra steadily built their lead to as many as 23 points and finally settled for the 58-40 lead at the halftime break. During the half, the Golden Eagles built their lead with the help of a 26-for-43 (60%) shooting performance.
In the opening minutes of the second half, La Sierra pushed their lead to 69-42. The two teams played relatively even for the remainder of the game, with the Pioneers cutting the lead under 20 points on six separate occasions, until the Golden Eagles used a 17-8 run over the final five minutes to close the game out.
Outside of Hamilton, the Golden Eagles used a balance scoring attack with a total of six players scoring in double-figures and every player scoring no less than six points. Lance Jones scored 14 points to go along with five rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Gerald Williams finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Also scoring 13 points in the win was Reynaldo Solorzano, who also tallied five rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Isaac Deese added 11 points and four assists, while Kevin Batiste contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
As a team, La Sierra had a season-high 28 assists on 44 made baskets. They also out-rebounded the Pioneers by a tally of 50-35. The win was the second win of the week, for the Golden Eagles, over the Pioneers. On Tuesday evening, La Sierra defeated Antelope Valley, 82-80, when Williams hit a floater as time expired to break the tie.
The men's basketball team will now hit the road for four straight games, starting with Thursday's game at #23 California Maritime Academy. The Keelhaulers defeated the Golden Eagles, 90-73, back on January 23.
