Vallejo, Calif. – In a rematch of last year's Cal Pac Championship game, the women's basketball team fell to the University of California – Merced in today's semifinal, 61-50, bringing the season to a close. The team ends the season with a record of 6-19 (2-6 in Cal Pac play).
The Golden Eagles were in control of the game for a large majority of the first 23 minutes of play. La Sierra held the lead, or a share thereof, for all but 10 seconds of the first half. Midway through the second quarter, a field goal by Afolake Akingba gave the Golden Eagles a 23-15 lead. They would go on to settle for a 29-25 halftime advantage.
Coming out of the locker room after the half, the Golden Eagles dominated the first three minutes and pushed their lead to 35-25. But over the next eight minutes, which includes the first minute of the fourth quarter, the Bobcats used an 18-4 run to take control of the game. They would eventually push their lead to as many as 15 points (61-46) before settling for the 61-50 win.
Rachel Hahn led the team with 16 points, seven steals, and three rebounds. Kristen Brummett was the only other Golden Eagle to score in double-figures with 11 points and nine rebounds, falling just short of a double-double. Akingba fell just short of a double-double as well, with nine points and 14 rebounds.
