The men's basketball team lost both conference games this weekend, on their second trip to northern California. On Thursday, the team was unable to keep pace with the first-place Keelhualers, of Cal Maritime, falling 91-80. That loss was followed by a 72-59 loss at the University of California – Merced, on Saturday night.
In Thursday's loss, a tough shooting first half put the Golden Eagles behind early, as they trailed 46-27 at the half. The team shot just 28-percent in the first half of play. They followed things up in the second half, by shooting 53-percent, but were unable to slow a Keelhaulers squad that combined to shoot 54-percent for the game.
Andre Marquez led the team in scoring with 21 points, while Lance Jones pitched in with 17 points, on 6-of-12 shooting including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Keenan Braden came off the bench to tally 12 points and five rebounds in the game.
Saturday night's contest proved to be a defensive battle in the first half, as Merced enjoyed a slight advantage, 28-26, at the halftime buzzer. But the Bobcats shooting hands got hot in the second half as they knocked down 7-of-14 three-pointers on their way to shooting 58-percent for the half.
Marquez led the team with 22 points and Gerald Williams added 16 points on the night.
The losses drop the Golden Eagles to 5-4 in Cal Pac play (6-16 overall). The men's basketball team will remain on the road as they travel to Arizona this coming weekend. The Golden Eagles will play a conference game at Embry-Riddle University on Saturday night, followed by a non-conference match-up with Benedictine University, on Sunday afternoon.
