Riverside, Calif. - The Golden Eagles baseball team settled for a split against the University of Sioux Falls, dropping Game 1, 17-1, and winning Game 2, 6-3. The win ended a 5-game losing streak and pushed the Golden Eagles record to 8-17-1 on the season.
In Game 1, the Cougars' pitching held La Sierra to just one hit through five innings of play. The USD offense scored in four of the five innings, including and 8-run third inning. The Cougars scored 17 runs on 18 total hits.
The Golden Eagles regrouped in Game 2, with a solid combined pitching performance by Michael Hoyes (3.1 IP, 5 Hits, 1 Run, 4 SO's), Victor Mena (2.1 IP, 2 Hits, 1 Run, 2 SO's), and Ben Miller (1.1 IP, 1 Hit, 1 Run, 1 SO).
La Sierra blew the game open in the third inning with a total of six runs. With one out, Thomas Martinez reached base on a bunt single, followed by a Johnny Salinas single to shallow right field, advancing Martinez to third. With runners on the corner, Matt Jaramillo launched a 3-run homerun over the right field fence for a 3-0 lead. But the Golden Eagles weren't done there…Michael Gonzalez reached base on a walk, which was followed by an infield single by Adrian Gardea, setting things up for Andrew Paz who matched Jaramillo with his own3-run homerun to deep left centerfield.
The Cougars out-hit the Golden Eagles, 8-7, and scored runs in three of the final four innings, of the 7-inning contest, but couldn't overcome La Sierra's big inning.
The team will travel to Marymount University, on Sunday, for two conference games before taking a break for final exams. Sunday's doubleheader will be played in the city of Compton, starting at 11am.
