Baseball Settles For Split With St. Katherine

The baseball team settled a split with St. Katherine College this afternoon, 8-7 and 14-16. The Golden Eagles scored seven runs in their final three at-bats to take Game 1, but they let Game 2 get away after giving up eight runs in the final inning.

Leading the way, in Game 1, for the Golden Eagles was Adrian Gardea who drove in two runs, with two hits in three at-bats. Matt Zurita hit a homerun and also collected two RBI's in the game. Johnny Salinas also went 2-for-3 and scored two of the Golden Eagles eight runs.

Andrew Gonzalez pitched 1 1/3 innings to pick up the victory for the Golden Eagles. The win pushed the team's record to 12-19-1 overall.

Game 2 was an offensive display with both teams combining for a total of 30 runs and 40 hits (20 hits each). The Golden Eagles sandwiched all of their runs between the first and seventh innings, which were the only two innings that La Sierra didn't score at least one run.

Seven players, led by Daniel Wray (4-for-4) at least two hits in the game. Michael Gonzalez led the team with four RBI's in the game. Zurita who went 2-for-4 hit his second homerun of the day and drove in two more RBI's in Game 2.

Leading 14-8 with only three outs away from a sweep, the Firebirds erupted for eight runs in the final inning to steal Game 2 away from the Golden Eagles. The loss dropped the Golden Eagles to 12-20-1 on the season.

La Sierra will travel to St. Katherine on Sunday afternoon for another non-conference doubleheader. The team will remain on the road with a doubleheader at Bethesda University on Tuesday before returning to their home field next Friday when they host Marymount University.
