For the first time since 2009, the Golden Eagles (0-1) hosted a women's soccer match. It was the first women's soccer match for La Sierra University, who cut the program back in 2009 when a decision was made to downsize the athletic department. The women's soccer team fell to St. Katherine College by a final of 3-1 in their season opener.
With five minutes remaining in the first half, La Sierra's Jennifer Gonzalez was inches from giving the Golden Eagles a halftime lead after her shot bounced off the right post. Both teams exchanged a handful of scoring chances, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, as the two teams played to a scoreless first half.
All four goals scored came in the second half, with St. Katherine's taking a 1-0 lead with a goal early in the half. The first goal was quickly followed up by a second goal, pushing the lead to 2-0, before Andrea Sida scored the first and only goal for the Golden Eagles, in the 67th minute, cutting the lead to 2-1. But the Firestorm sealed the victory with another insurance goal in the 71st minute.
Golden Eagles goalkeeper, Lauren Holly, was active all afternoon finishing with 12 saves, while surrendering the three goals.
The women's soccer team will be back in action on Thursday, following the men's match, at 8pm. The Golden Eagles will host Providence Christian College after the men's soccer team host UC Merced in their Cal Pac opener.
