Riverside, Calif. - The women's volleyball team had their three-match winning streak ended in tonight's 3-0 loss to Hope International University (26-24, 25-22, 25-18). The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 3-5 on the season. The Royals improve to 8-5 on the year and extended their winning streak to four with the victory.
The first two sets were tightly contested, but a late run in Set 3 gave the Royals a convincing non-conference win. Neither team had a superb night attacking the ball with Hope connecting on 38 kills, with 18 errors, on 133 attempts (.150). La Sierra countered with 38 kills of their own, but had 26 errors, on 146 attempts (.082).
Taylor Moran led La Sierra with 15 kills, while Kiana Krumm and Michelle Mendizabal contributed nine kills and eight kills, respectively.
Both teams were on point defensively, resulting in some very long rallies. The Royals defense edged out the Golden Eagles defense, 9-7 in total team blocks and 74-71 in digs.
The Golden Eagles had four players who finished in double figures for digs. The libero, Emily Morgan led the way with 21 digs, followed by Mendizabal with 12, Krumm had 11 digs, and setter Marissa Fregoso added another 10 digs.
Fregoso also added three service aces and 18 assists in the effort. Smriti Sharma, who shares the setting responsibilities with Fregoso added 15 assists on the night.
The team will get back into conference play this weekend when they host Providence Christian College, on Saturday night, at 8pm. They will follow that Cal Pac match with two non-conference matches on Sunday, at home, versus UC Santa Cruz (10am) and Chapman University (230pm).
