Costa Mesa, Calif. - The Golden Eagles baseball team opened their 2017 campaign on the road with a match-up against #20 Vanguard University, in Costa Mesa, California. After jumping out the early lead, La Sierra was unable to contain the potent Lions line-up, as they eventually dropped the opener 14-5.
After a scoreless first inning of play, La Sierra used four hits to score four runs and take the early 4-0 lead. The big hit in the inning was a two-run double, by designated hitter Justin Jordan, down the left field line.
The Lions got one run back in the bottom half of the second inning, cutting the lead to 4-1.
La Sierra regained their 4-run cushion with a sacrifice fly by David Roman, which scored Matt Mahjer, pushing the lead to 5-1 in the third inning.
Vanguard once again answered with a run of their own, in the bottom of the third inning, trimming the Golden Eagles advantage to 5-2.
But the Lions broke the game open by scoring nine runs over the next two innings. In the fourth inning, they scored four runs on four hits, only to back that up with five runs on four hits in the fifth inning.
La Sierra was held to no runs on four hits in the final six innings of play.
The Lions Tyler Steele picked up the win for Vanguard, while Andrew Gonzalez was charged with the loss.
Vanguard scored their 14 runs on 17 hits and capitalized on three errors by La Sierra. The Golden Eagles countered with five runs on eight hits.
Jordan and Roman led the way offensively for the Golden Eagles with each going 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Jordan finished with two RBI's with Roman and Thomas Martinez adding one RBI each.
The Golden Eagles next game is scheduled for the coming Friday at Shepherd University (Los Angeles, Calif.). Weather reports suggest that the game may be rained out, but please stay tuned to our social sites for further updates.
