The Golden Eagles baseball team went 1-2 this weekend as they fell to Bethesda University, 14-8, on Friday afternoon, then split Sunday's doubleheader at Cal Tech (6-7 and 14-0). The Golden Eagles picked up their first win of the season in Sunday's second game to improve to 1-3 on the young season.
Friday, the team played a "home" game at Santiago High School as the baseball field was not ready for play after the recent storms left work to be done. But despite a neutral field and a harsh wind, the day proved prime for baseball.
La Sierra jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, to take a 2-1 advantage. But a 6-run top of the second inning by Bethesda proved to be a hole the Golden Eagles were unable to climb out of.
La Sierra scored at least one run in all but three of the innings, tallying a total of eight runs on 10 hits. Matt Mahjer and Justin Jordan each collected two hits on the afternoon, while David Roman picked up three RBI's on one hit and Josh Jubile drove in two runs with his one hit to account for five of the team's six earned runs.
Gabriel Gonzalez was charged with the loss after giving up eight runs (six earned) on seven hits, through three innings of work.
On Sunday, the team traveled to Pasadena for two seven-inning games against the Beavers of Cal Tech.
In Game 1, La Sierra found themselves playing catch-up early after giving up four runs in the first inning. The Golden Eagles finally got on the board with a run in the third inning. They added another run in the fifth, cutting the lead to 5-2, but their comeback fell short despite scoring two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings, eventually falling by a final of 7-6.
But the Golden Eagles bats came alive in Game 2 as did pitcher Jeff Guerrero who held the Beavers to no runs on just three hits through six innings of work.
Six different players contributed at least two hits in the offensive barrage. Thomas Martinez, Daniel Wray, Roman, Mahjer, and Jubile each had two hits in the game, while Jordan led the team with three hits. Matthew Ziprich led the team with three RBI's with Martinez adding two RBI's in the game.
On Friday, the team will travel to #8 Westmont College for an afternoon doubleheader starting at 11am.
