Riverside, Calif. - Abel Cornejo scores his second of two goals on the night five minutes into overtime to defeat the University of Antelope Valley, 2-1, in tonight's Cal Pac match. In the process, the Golden Eagles extend their winning streak to six straight matches; improving to 6-4 overall and most importantly 4-0 in Cal Pac play, taking sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
It was another physical match between the two Cal Pac opponents, with neither team able to score a goal in the first 45 minutes of play. Cornejo put La Sierra on the scoreboard, in the 63rd minute, on an assist by Noe Garcia. The 1-0 lead held up until the Pioneers capitalized on one of their many chances, tying the score at 1-1 in the 80th minute.
The score remained tied through the end of regulation until Cornejo sent everyone home with his second goal of the match and his eighth goal in the team's last five matches. It is also the third match this season he has scored two goals in a match.
The team will put their streak to the test this weekend when they travel to Soka University (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), on Saturday night. Soka is currently 2-2 (5-4 overall) with wins over Cal Maritime and Sierra Nevada, and losses to Embry-Riddle and Benedictine University
