Riverside, Calif. - It was a thrilling 4-3 victory, for the Golden Eagles, over Benedictine University on Sunday afternoon that has kept the team in the hunt for the number one seed in the conference standings. The win pushed La Sierra's record to 7-1 in the Cal Pac and 9-5 overall. The Golden Eagles have three Cal Pac matches remaining on their regular season schedule.
The Redhawks, who are battling to climb into the fourth and final playoff spot, wasted no time getting on the board. Benedictine took a 2-0 lead, early in the first half, with goals in the 6th and 9th minutes. The two early goals accounted for all of the scoring in the first half of play.
But the Golden Eagles came out a more determined bunch in the second half, as Israel Vasquez scored his 16th of the year, in the 51st minute, cutting the lead to 2-1. Vasquez's goal tied Mingyu Wee (2015) for the most goals scored in a season.
Noe Garcia tied the score at 2-2, in the 61st minute, on an assist by Abel Cornejo. The score remained tied until the Redhawks scored the go ahead goal in the 72nd minute and put momentarily put the Golden Eagles on their heels. But La Sierra would not be denied.
With the second half winding down, Felipe Mendizabal squared a ball up that glanced off of a Benedictine defender and past the goalkeeper, tying the score at 3-3 in the 82nd minute.
But the drama didn't end there. After a Benedictine foul at midfield and the clock ticking off the final seconds of the match, Israel Vasquez launched a ball toward the Redhawks goal and found the head of Luis Perez who scored the game winning goal with four seconds remaining on the clock.
It was a tale of two halves for the Golden Eagles who scored no goals in the first half compared to four goals in the second half. They also tallied three shots in the first half, compared to 15 total shots in the second half.
Now the team will look ahead to a showdown with #16 Marymount University. The Mariners are currently undefeated in conference play with a record of 7-0. A Golden Eagles win would put them in first place, while a loss would drop the Golden Eagles to third place. The two teams will battle it out this coming Thursday, at 11am. The match is scheduled to be played El Camino College.
