Riverside, Calif. - The women's basketball team was back on the road tonight, facing #5 Vanguard University, in a non-conference game, losing by a final of 80-64. It was the home and season opener for the Lions who started the season with five straight exhibition/scrimmages against NCAA Division I opponents. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-4 on the season, as the team will be right back at it on Saturday night, at #7 Westmont.
Despite one of their best shooting performances of the season, the Golden Eagles were unable to keep pace with Vanguard who took a 42-32 lead into the half, and used a strong fourth quarter to pull away for the victory. The Golden Eagles did outscore the Lions, 18-14, in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
Tania Uluheua led all scores with 22 points on a perfect night from the field, going 9-for-9 in field goals, and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. She was one of three Vanguard players to score in double figures.
Elsie Mejia led the Golden Eagles with 18 points, on 6-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-6 from the three-point line. Mikayla Stitt added 15 points and six rebounds, while DeShields Fajardo contributed 12 points and five assists on the night.
The team will have one day off before playing their fourth game in seven days, when they travel to Santa Barbara to face the #7 Westmont College Warriors. The Warriors are currently 2-0 on the season. Saturday night's tip-off will be at 6pm.
