Riverside, Calif. – The women's basketball team won their fifth game in six tries, with Thursday's, 72-69, non-conference win over the University of Montana-Western, playing out of the NAIA's Frontier Conference. The win puts the Golden Eagles record at 5-8 on the season. The team has two games this next week before taking a brief break for the holidays, and diving into conference play.
The Golden Eagles led from the tip to the final buzzer and wasted no time taking control of the contest. Despite five tie scores, in the early going, the Bulldogs never held a lead as La Sierra led by as many as 15 points, midway through the first quarter. The Bulldogs did outscore, the Golden Eagles over the next three quarters but it wasn't enough to overcome the 11-point margin that the Golden Eagles built in the opening frame.
Mikayla Stitt scored a career-high 26 points, while Alexis Davis finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds on the night. Elsie Mejia added nine points to the tally, and DeShields Fajardo scored seven points while dishing out six assists.
With Fall quarter completed and finals week behind them, the Golden Eagles will be able to focus solely on basketball this week. On Tuesday, the Golden Eagles travel to the University of La Verne for a non-conference game against the Leopards, at 7pm. They will follow that game up with a home game against Ottawa University (Ariz.), on Thursday evening, at 6pm.
