Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB Drop Final Two Road Games Of Season

The women's basketball team dropped their final two games of the season, on the road, falling to Benedictine-Mesa (74-62) and Embry-Riddle (97-64). The team closes out the 2016-17 season with an overall record of 8-19 overall (4-10 Cal Pac). The team loses four seniors and will potentially return 11 players from their current roster.

On Thursday, the team visited Benedictine-Mesa, where a slow start proved to be the big difference in the game. The Golden Eagles trailed 23-15 after the first quarter but were never able to close the gap over the next three quarters.

Celina Calderon scored a team-high 11 points, while Alexis Davis added 10 points and six rebounds on the night. Elsie Mejia pitched in with nine points and five steals, with Amanda Sanchez adding eight points and seven rebounds of her own.

In their final act of the season, the team travelled to Embry-Riddle University and was quickly forced to play catch-up. After one quarter of play the Golden Eagles trailed 21-11 with the deficit growing to 54-19 by the halftime break. La Sierra responded by outscoring the Red Hawks in the second half, 45-43, but that was clearly not enough to overcome the deficit.

Davis (22 points) and Sanchez (10 points) were the only two Golden Eagles to score in double figures. Sanchez also tied a team-high with six rebounds and DeShields Fajardo also pulled down six rebounds to go along with eight points, seven rebounds, and four steals.

The team will now turn their attention to next season as they hit the weight room and the recruiting trail. Check back periodically for updates on any women's basketball signings.
