The men's basketball team finished 1-1 in their most recent road trip to northern California. The Golden Eagles opened the trip with a 75-69 win over Simpson University, before falling to Pacific Union, 79-60, in Sunday afternoon's match-up. La Sierra is now 1-9 in Cal Pac play (2-22 overall).
Isaac Deese had a monster game with a career high 35 points, on 11-of -19 shooting, including 6-for-9 from the three point line. The Golden Eagles led the game from the opening tip to the final buzzer. At the halftime break, La Sierra took a 43-31 lead into the locker room. They increased the lead to as many as 17 points in the second half, and were able to hold off a late run by the Redhawks for their first conference win of the season.
Joining Deese, was Kyle Hamilton who had 13 points, while Eduardo Gomez del Casal Rodriguez finished with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rey Solorzano also scored in double digits with 10 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double of his own.
Approximately 13 hours after Saturday night's game, the team had the tough task of turning around and hitting the court for Sunday's game. The Golden Eagles gutted things out to stay within striking distance in the first half, as they trailed 39-34 at the half. But things caught up to the Golden Eagles in the second half as they were outscored 40-26 and committed 16 of their 23 turnovers in the second half alone. The team also struggled from the field and from the free throw line.
Hamilton led the team with 13 points, with Deese adding 12 points. Gomez del Casal Rodriguez had 11 points and 14 rebounds to notch his ninth double-double of the season.
The team returns home on Thursday for the first of their final two home games this season. The University of California-Merced will visit the Golden Eagles on Thursday, followed by a Saturday night match-up with California Maritime Academy, on Senior Night.
