Mesa, Ariz. - Golden Eagles baseball travelled to Benedictine University this past weekend, dropping two of three games in the Cal Pac series. The Redhawks swept Friday's doubleheader by winning 13-3 and 12-2. La Sierra was able to salvage Sunday's finale, 11-7, to push their record to 3-5 in Cal Pac play (11-13 overall).
While collecting a total of 10 hits, the Golden Eagles were only able to push across three runs in the opening game of the series. The Redhawks, on the other hand, scored 10 of their 13 runs in two of the seven innings played. Thomas Martinez, David Roman, and Trevor Resler each collected two hits in the game and accounted for six of the team's 10 total hits. Andrew Lundstrom had one hit and led the team with two runs batted in.
Jeff Guerrero pitched four innings and was charged with the loss after giving up eight runs and nine hits.
The Redhawks followed up that victory with a two-hitter, on their way to a 12-2 victory. With Benedictine's pitching containing the Golden Eagles offense, their bats also contributed with 12 runs on 18 total hits. The Redhawks scored at least one run in each of the seven innings played.
Matthew Zimprich and Lundstrom picked up the only hits for the Golden Eagles who scored two unearned runs.
Skylar Sylvester picked up the win for Benedictine, while Julian Viscaro was charged with the loss.
On the verge of being swept, the Golden Eagles bats exploded for eight runs in the final inning to steal the 11-7 win in Sunday's final game. The Golden Eagles took advantage of two base-on-balls and three players being hit-by-pitches, along with their four hits, in scoring the decisive runs after entering the inning trailing, 7-3.
Up until that inning, the Redhawks pitching had done a good job of holding the Golden Eagles to three runs on three hits. But the free bases came back to haunt Benedictine and keep them from sweeping the weekend series.
Four different Golden Eagles players (Craig Woolson, Daniel Wray, Lundstrom, and Roman) collected two runs batted in, while Justin Jordan also finished with one run batted in of his own.
Michael Hoyes, who entered the game and pitched the eighth inning, picked up the win for La Sierra.
The team will take this week off for final exams before jumping back into action next weekend. The Golden Eagles will host Marymount University on Friday and Sunday for a 3-game series. The two teams will play a single game on Friday, starting at 11am, followed by a doubleheader on Sunday, also starting at 11am.
