Santa Clarita, Calif. – The women's volleyball team picked up their second win of the season with a 5-set victory over The Master's University (25-15, 22-25, 25-12, 17-25, 15-12). Sophomore outside hitter, Kiana Krumm, paced the team offensively and finished with 22 kills, just two kills shy of her career-high set last week against St. Katherine College. La Sierra improves to 2-3 on the season, while the Mustangs fall to 2-5.
With the scored tied 8-8 in Set 1, the Golden Eagles went on to outscore the Mustangs 17-7 to jump out to the 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs answered back and evened the match at 1-1 by winning the second set. It was a tight set throughout with neither team enjoying more than a 3-point advantage throughout the set.
After splitting the next two sets, with the Golden Eagles winning Set 3 and the Mustangs staying alive in Set 4, the match moved to a fifth and deciding set.
It was the Mustangs who held the first advantage with the help of a 3-0 run that vaulted them into the lead, at 7-4. But the Golden Eagles quickly erased the lead with a 3-0 run of their own, tying the score at 7-7. The two teams switched sides with the Golden Eagles trailing the Mustangs 8-7. From that point on, the Golden Eagles used a 5-2 run and were able to hang on to that advantage, escaping with the 15-12 victory.
It was the second victory ever and second straight win over The Master's, who lost to the Golden Eagles in five sets last September. La Sierra dropped the first seven meetings between the two teams in the program's history.
Krumm, who finished with a .395 attack percentage, had only five attack errors on a total of 43 attempts, to go along with 16 digs, which was also a team-high.
Michele Mendizabal added 14 kills and led the team with five block assists.
Emily Morgan pitched in with 14 digs, while Noelle Hamblin contributed four block assists on the night.
Marissa Fregoso and Hannah Schaffer once again led the offensive attack and tallied 23 assists and 21 assists, respectively.
The team will look to carry the momentum from tonight's win into Thursday night's match at Hope International University. The Royals are 5-2 on the season and recently finished 2-1 at the Golden Eagles Invitational last week, with their lone loss coming to #16 Cornerstone University in five sets. Thursday's match is scheduled for a 5pm start.
