Riverside, Calif. - The Golden Eagles women's basketball team improved to 3-1 in Cal Pac play (8-10 overall) with Thursday's 79-64 win over visiting California Maritime Academy. The 3-1 mark puts four Cal Pac teams in a relative tie for first place, discounting any potential tiebreakers, with just about one third of the conference season having been played. La Sierra will look for their third straight win on Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead, before the Keelhaulers stormed back with a run to finish the first quarter with a flurry and a 20-17 lead. But La Sierra rebounded with a strong second quarter to take a 39-34 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Golden Eagles put the game out of reach by outscoring Maritime, 29-11 in the third quarter alone. La Sierra pushed the lead to 27 points midway through the fourth quarter, which was their largest lead of the game.
Alexis Davis led the team with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Ariana Sheehy and Korie Siets both finished with a team 13 points each.
The Golden Eagles dominated the boards, by finishing with a 51-39 advantage in total rebounds. The team also held the Keelhaulers to 30-percent shooting from the field, including just 22-percent in the second half.
The team will host the University of California – Merced, who lost their first conference game of the season on Thursday against the University of Antelope Valley. The Bobcats are the defending conference champions, entering Saturday night's contest with a record of 3-1 in Cal Pac play (11-7 overall). Saturday night's game will tip-off at 6:30pm.
