Baseball Opens Season With Win Over Vanguard

Costa Mesa, Calif. - The Golden Eagles baseball team opened their 2018 campaign with a 5-3 win over Vanguard University, on Monday afternoon. Jeremy Guerrero went five complete innings, giving up just one earned run on five hits, to pick up his first win of the season. Lucero Eric came in, in the ninth inning, to pick up his first save of the season. The baseball team is off and running and back in action this coming weekend.

It was the Lions who jumped out with an early 2-0 lead, in the bottom of the second inning. Vanguard scored the two runs on two hits and capitalized on a Golden Eagles error.

The score remained 2-0 until the Golden Eagles tied the score at 2-2 with two runs in their half of the fifth inning. Josh Jubile got the inning started with a single to center field and advanced to second on an infield single by Daniel Wray. Jonny Salinas subsequently doubled to center, driving in Jubile and advancing Wray to third on the play. Wray scored the tying run on Trevor Resler's sacrifice fly.

The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game in the following inning when Andrew Lundstrom reached on a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and ultimately scored on Craig Woolsen's sacrifice fly.

The lead would be a lead that the team would not relinquish, adding two more runs in the eighth inning, on their way to victory.

Woolsen led the team with two RBI's. David Roman, Salinas, and Resler each added an RBI of their own, while Daniel Wray led the team in hits, going 2-for-3 on the afternoon.

The Golden Eagles scored their five runa, all earned, on seven hits and were able to overcome three errors in the game.

The team will be back in action on Friday and Sunday as they host Bethesda University, in their first three home games of the season. Friday's contest is a single game, followed by Sunday's doubleheader.
