Riverside, Calif. - The University of Antelope Valley used a strong second half to defeat the Golden Eagles, 93-61, in Saturday Cal Pac match-up. It was the second largest margin of defeat this season for La Sierra. The loss drops the team to 2-6 in Cal Pac play, but still just two games out of a playoff position, with six games left to play.
But in order to leap frog the teams in front of them, the Golden Eagles will need much more consistency in their game. After overcoming a first half deficit, the team grinded things out in the final 10 minutes of the half to trail 35-32 at the half.
After shooting 46-percent in the first half, the Golden Eagles were held to just 30-percent in the second half, including 1-of-7 from beyond the arc. The offensive struggles led to the defensive side of the floor where the Pioneers shot 56-percent from the field and 50-percent (6-of-12) from the three-point line. In total, the Pioneers outscored the Golden Eagles, 58-29, in the second half of play.
Rey Solorzano scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season. DJ Everage shot 7-for-11, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, for a total of 20 points to lead the team. The duo finished the game as they only two players to score in double-figures.
The team will look to turn the page and as they try to even the season series with Pacific Union College, on Thursday evening. The Golden Eagles fell, 93-91, at Pacific Union, back on January 6, when a second half comeback of their own fell just short. Thursday's game will begin at approximately 7:30pm, following the conclusion of the women's basketball game.
