Costa Mesa, Calif. - The Vanguard Lions pressure defense proved too much for the Golden Eagles men's basketball team, who lost, on the road, by a final of 95-60. La Sierra committed a total of 28 turnovers, resulting in 30 points for the Lions. Vanguard also finished with a 48-20 advantage in the paint, and a 50-27 advantage in points off of the bench.
Despite doubling their point total from the first half to the second half, the Golden Eagles were unable to dig themselves out of a 39-20 deficit at the halftime break. The Lions connected on only 1-of-11 three-point field goals in the first half, but shot 8-for-13 in the second half alone, more than enough to overcome a 6-of-12 showing from the free throw line in the second half.
La Sierra's second half numbers were an improvement from their first half struggles, including a respectable 12-of-15 from the charity stripe. But it wasn't enough to make a dent into the Lions lead, as the team dropped to 0-2 on the season.
For the second straight game, freshmen Duane Darrett Jr. led the team in scoring with 12 points, shooting 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Kyle Hamilton was 4-for-7 from the free throw line and finished with 10 points.
After starting the season with two road contests, the men's basketball team will host San Diego Christian College in their home opener, on Thursday evening, at 6pm.
