It was a busy weekend for the Golden Eagles softball team, who played six games over a three-day span. The team picked up their first two wins of the season, going 2-4 through those six games. The first four contests were played at the Triple Crown Tournament – NAIA SoCal Classic, on Friday and Saturday. The team then hosted Concordia University (Ore.) on Sunday in their home opener. The team's record now sits at 2-7-1 on the season.
Friday, February 9
La Sierra 5, William Jessup 12
Kaylee Quezada had two of the team's eight hits. Six other players picked up a hit in the game with Hunter Alvarez leading the team with three runs batted in. La Sierra committed three errors in the game. Sarai Camacho went 5 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits in the loss.
La Sierra 4, Ottawa (AZ) 3
The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the seventh inning and hung on for the one-run victory, their first of the season. Sierra Singer went 2-for-3, including a 2-run single that proved to be the game winning hit. Jamie Roe also had a 2-for-3 game, as the two players accounted for four of the team's six total hits. Vanessa Froussine pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on seven hits and picking up her first win of the season.
La Sierra 13, Menlo 4
La Sierra took advantage of six Oaks errors, in scoring their 13 runs on eight hits. Alvarez went 2-for-4 and led the team with three RBI's in addition to two runs scored. Kirsten Hernandez picked up the victory, pitching all five innings and giving up four runs on seven hits.
Saturday, February 10
La Sierra 2, #3 Southern Oregon 3
La Sierra stood toe-to-toe with the #3 Raiders up until a late run, in the seventh inning, gave SOU the victory. The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the opening innings and held a 2-1 lead until the Raiders tied things up in the fifth inning and eventually went on to win with an unearned run in the seventh. Aimee Rodriguez and Alvarez finished with two hits in the game, with Alvarez and Roe notching an RBI. Hernandez gave up three runs, only one earned run, on seven hits in six-plus innings of work.
Sunday, February 11
La Sierra 8, Concordia 9
The Golden Eagles scored eight unanswered runs but it still wasn't enough to overcome a 9-0 deficit the team faced after two and a half innings of play. Rodriguez led the team with three hits and four RBI's. Berlyn Benavides and Roe each added two hits in the loss. Camacho was charged with the loss in Game 1.
La Sierra 3, Concordia 6
With the game tied at 3-3, Concordia scored three runs in the top half of the sixth inning and went on to sweep the non-conference doubleheader. The Golden Eagles had 11 hits, led by Roe who went 3-for-3 in the game. Brigitta Doherty and Klarissa Garcia added two hits apiece, while Brittney Meyers led the team with two RBI's. Froussine, who gave up three runs on four hits, through three innings, was charged with the Game 2 loss.
The Golden Eagles are back on the road this coming Friday, when they visit St. Katherine's College. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 9am.
