Baseball Takes One of Four Versus St. Katherine

The Golden Eagles baseball team recently completed a 4-game series against St. Katherine College. The two teams played two doubleheaders over a two-day span with each team hosting the other. The Flames swept Friday's doubleheader, at La Sierra by finals of 13-4 and 14-6. On Sunday, the Golden Eagles took the opener 7-4 before falling in the second game 18-16. The team is now 7-7 on the season.

Friday, February 16

La Sierra 4, St. Katherine 13

The Flames scored 10 runs over a three-inning span to put what was a 3-3 game out of reach. Johnny Salinas had a 2-for-2 game with an RBI. Jake Taylor had a 2-RBI single in the loss. Jeremy Guerrero gave up six runs on nine hits through 4 2/3 innings and was charged with the loss.

La Sierra 6, St. Katherine 14

In Game 2 of the doubleheader, a 7-run fifth inning put the game out of reach. The Golden Eagles got five runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but St. Katherine scored three more runs in the sixth on their way to victory. Matt Majher (2-for-5) and Craig Woolson (2-for-2) each tallied two hits and one RBI in the game. Andrew Lundstrom led the team going 3-for-4 with an RBI of his own. Andrew Gonzalez was charged with the Game 2 loss.

Sunday, February 18

La Sierra 7, St. Katherine 4

A 4-run eighth inning pushed the Golden Eagles to a 7-4 lead. After the two teams each scored two runs in the opening frame, the Flames took a 3-2 lead with a run in the fourth inning. The Golden Eagles answered right back with a run in the next half inning to tie the score at 3-3, but the Flames regained the lead with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The Flames held the lead until the Golden Eagles scored four runs in the eighth inning to pick up the victory. Taylor, Salinas, and Justin Hinojosa each had two hits in the game with Hinojosa finishing with a team-high two RBI's. Five other players notched at least one RBI in the win. Chris Johnson picked up the victory, in relief, while Eric Lucero picked up the save.

La Sierra 16, St. Katherine 18

In what was a high-scoring, back-and-forth, affair the Golden Eagles' seven runs over the last two innings of play weren't enough to catch the Flames and sweep the doubleheader. The two teams combined for the 34 runs on a total of 32 hits, 17 for the Flames and 15 hits for the Golden Eagles. Woolson led the Golden Eagles with three hits and four RBI's, including a homerun. Matjher also homered in the game, while nine total players had at least one hit in the offensive affair.

The team opens conference play this coming weekend at the University of Antelope Valley. La Sierra will play a single game on Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Sunday.
