Riverside, Calif. - The Golden Eagles opened conference play with a doubleheader split against Embry-Riddle University on Friday afternoon. After dropping Game 1, 6-7, La Sierra answered back with a 13-4 victory in Game 2. The two teams were scheduled to play another doubleheader on Sunday, but this weekend's rain left the fields unplayable. The doubleheader has been re-scheduled for Monday, April 9, and will still be played at La Sierra University. The Golden Eagles are now 8-13-1 on the season, including 1-1 in Cal Pac play.
La Sierra – 6, ERAU – 7
The Golden Eagles grabbed the early lead with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. The score remained 3-1 until ERAU put five runs on the board, in the third frame, and took a 7-3 lead after adding another run in the fourth. La Sierra tried to claw back but fell short in the conference opening game for both teams. Sarai Camacho was charged with the loss after giving up six runs (only three earned) on seven hits, through two innings pitched. Berlyn Benavides and Taylor Ross each went 3-for-4 in the game, accounting for six of the team's 10 hits.
La Sierra – 13, ERAU – 4
After dropping Game 1, the team rebounded with a couple of big innings of their own in Game 2 to even the series with a dominating victory that ended in the fifth inning, due to the 'mercy rule'. Megan Dalton pitched 4 1/3 innings to pick up the victory. Hunter Alvarez finished the game going 1-for-2 with the one hit resulting in a grand slam homerun. Aimee Rodriguez also made the most of a 1-for-2 game with a 3-RBI double. Benavides again tied the team lead for hits, finishing the game going 2-for-3, which matched Kaylee Quezada's line.
The softball team will now set their sights on Arizona Christian who are scheduled to visit the Golden Eagles on Friday afternoon. The two teams will play a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1pm.
