Riverside, Calif. - After dropping Game 1, 10-8, the Golden Eagles answered back in a big way in Game 2, with a 21-5 win, to salvage a split in Friday's non-conference doubleheader, at San Diego Christian. The team's record now stands at 7-12-1 on the season, with conference play getting underway this coming weekend.
La Sierra – 8, San Diego Christian – 10
The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard first, with a run in the top of the first inning, but that proved to be short-lived as the Hawks put four runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning. La Sierra then took a 7-4 lead by scoring two runs in the second and four runs in the third, only to lose lead in the bottom of the third inning when the Hawks put another four runs on the board, taking an 8-7 lead. The Golden Eagles tied the score at 8-8 with a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Hawks once again answered with two runs in the sixth to take Game 1. The Golden Eagles outhit the Hawks, 8-6, but were unable to overcome four defensive errors. Berlyn Benavides and Aimee Rodriguez each finished with two hits and accounted for four of the team's eight hits. Sarai Camacho was charged with the loss after coming in the game for the final two innings, giving up two runs on two hits.
La Sierra – 21, San Diego Christian – 5
After letting the first game get away, a determined Golden Eagles squad exploded for 21 runs on 19 hits. The team scored 20 of the team's 21 runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Due to the 'mercy rule' the game was shortened to only five innings played. A total of seven Golden Eagles players finished the game with at least two hits. Kaylee Quezada led the team with four hits, while Hunter Alvarez and Benavides tallied three hits apiece. Elizabeth Pena and Rodriguez led the team with four RBI's each, while Alvarez and Quezada each notched three RBI's in the win. Megan Dalton entered the game in the third inning and pitched two innings to pick up the win, giving up just one run on one hit.
The Golden Eagles softball team will open Cal Pac Conference play this coming weekend when the team welcomes Embry-Riddle University for two doubleheaders. The two team will play doubleheaders on Friday and Sunday, starting at 12pm and 11am, respectively.
