Softball: Golden Eagles Take 3-of-4 From Mariners

The Golden Eagles softball team took three of four games from Marymount University this past week, pushing their overall record to 13-16-1, while improving to 4-2 in Cal Pac play. Due to field availability, or the lack thereof, Marymount actually played as the home team on La Sierra's home field.

Thursday, March 29

La Sierra – 10, Marymount – 1

The Golden Eagles dominated in the opening game of the 4-game series behind the arm of pitcher Sarai Camacho who pitched a complete game for the victory. Camacho gave up one run on seven hits with five strikeouts. Berlyn Benavides set the table for the Golden Eagles, going 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI's. Aimee Rodriguez led the team with four RBI's, going 2-for-5. Catcher Jamie Roe and Kaylee Quezada also contributed with two hits each. The Golden Eagles scored their 10 runs on 13 total hits and capitalized on seven errors committed by the Mariners.

La Sierra – 9, Marymount – 8 (8 innings)

Game 2 of the day, started on Thursday, but was completed on Friday morning, prior to the doubleheader. The game was suspended twice, the first time due to the sun being in the eyes of the catcher and umpire and the second time due to darkness. The game was ultimately suspended with the two teams tied at 8-8, in the seventh inning of play. When play resumed, the Mariners stranded the potential winning run on third base, only to see the Golden Eagles score a run in the top half of the eighth inning for the win. Benavides finished going 4-for-5 with an RBI and scoring two runs in the win. Roe finished with two hits along with Brittney Meyers who had a 2-for-4 game. Rodriquez led the team with another four RBI game, with a grand slam homerun.

Friday, March 30

La Sierra – 6, Marymount – 3

Camacho picked up her second win of the series, with the help of a come from behind victory by the Golden Eagles who scored four runs in the seventh inning. After taking a 2-0 lead with runs in the 4th and 5th innings, the Mariners tied the score at 2-2 with two runs in the 5th inning, before eventually taking the lead with a run in the 6th inning. Not to be denied, the Golden Eagles regained the lead with the 4-run 7th inning. Brigitta Doherty and Meyers led the way offensively with two hits apiece. For the third straight game, Rodriguez led the team with two RBI's in the win.

La Sierra – 4, Marymount – 12

In their only loss of the series, the Golden Eagles saw their brief 3-1 lead erased by a 10-run 3rd inning by the Mariners. Camacho who was going for her third win of the series, was charged with the loss giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits through two innings of work. Roe finished with two of the team's five hits.

The team will host the University of Antelope Valley this coming weekend, on Friday and Sunday, for 4-game conference series. Friday's games are set to start at 1pm, followed by a Sunday doubleheader at 11am.
