Riverside, Calif. - Jennifer Medina and Alexis Garcia scored seven of the Golden Eagles 10 goals in Sunday night's victory over the University of St. Katherine. Medina led the way with four goals, while Garcia added three goals on the night. The win pushes the team's record to 2-0 to start the season. The ten goals are one goal shy of a team record, set last season, in an 11-0 win over these same Firebirds.
The Golden Eagles scored early and often in the lopsided win over the Firebirds. Medina scored her first goal in the 13thminute, before an own goal pushed the lead to 2-0 just minutes later. Marissa Gonzalez (assisted by A. Moreno) and Adrienna Moreno each added a goal to account for the scoring in the first half.
Medina opened the second half by scoring three straight goals, only to be matched by Garcia who scored three straight goals of her own. Only one of the six second half goals was unassisted. Marisol Bravo led the way with two assists, while Gonzalez, Garcia, and Moreno each added an assist in the second half scoring.
Valentina Zito, the Firebirds goalkeeper was under pressure all evening and did her best to keep the ball out of the net, finishing with 16 saves. On the other side of the field, Melanie Ramirez picked up the victory with one save on the night. The Golden Eagles finished with a total of 54 shots, including 25 shots on goal.
The team is off until September 6 when they return to their home field to host Bethesda University, at 6pm. It will be the first meeting between the two teams in program history.
