Softball Drops Doubleheader to #14 Vanguard

Costa Mesa, Calif. - The Golden Eagles softball team spent their President's Day battling #14 Vanguard University, in a non-conference doubleheader, in Costa Mesa, California. The Lions held the Golden Eagles to just five hits over the two games, winning Game 1, 8-0, and Game 2, 9-2. The losses drop the team to 1-4 on the season.

Taylor Ross and Brandi Almaraz were the only two Golden Eagles players to pick up a hit in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Lions scored their eight runs on 10 hits. Four of the runs were scored in the bottom half of the fifth inning, bringing the game to a halt.

Vanessa Dwyer pitched all five innings to pick up the win, while Megan Dalton was charged with the loss, giving up three runs on just two hits. Kirsten Hernandez came in to pitch the final 1 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits.

In Game 2, the Golden Eagles were able to push two runs across the plate, in the 5thinning of play. The two runs tied the score at 2-2 momentarily, but the Lions answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead for good.

Taylor Brooks, Kallie Sorenson, and Ross each picked up a hit in the game.

Mariah Moronez pitched the first 4 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits, and was charged with the loss. Vanguard's Kolbi Tonini pitched a complete game for the Lions to pick up the victory.

The softball team will be back in action on Sunday, February 24, when they host Puget Sound Christian College, starting at 10am.
