Riverside, Calif, - The Maple Leafs, visiting from Goshen College (Goshen, Ind.), swept both games of today's non-conference doubleheader from the Golden Eagles. Goshen took the first game, 6-4, then followed that victory up with a 6-2 win in Game 2. The losses drop the Golden Eagles record to 3-7 on the season.
Game 1: Goshen def. La Sierra, 6-4
The Maple Leafs scored at least one run in four of the seven innings. They jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with one run in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4thinnings, but the Golden Eagles took advantage of two Goshen errors and a couple of timely hits to tie the score at 3-3 after four innings of play. The Maple Leafs quickly regained the lead with three runs in the top of the 5thinning, and never looked back from there.
Kallie Sorenson led the team offensively, going 2-for-3 and driving in two of the team's three runs.
Mariyah Moronez got the start and was charged with the loss, after surrendering six runs on seven hits, through 4 2/3 innings of work.
Game 2: Goshen def. La Sierra, 6-2
In a game where both teams tallied a total of 10 hits apiece, it was the Maple Leafs who once again prevailed by scoring runs in four of the seven innings played. Goshen wasted no time as they scored a one run in each of the first two innings, to take a 2-0 lead. La Sierra cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the bottom half of the 3rdinning, but that would prove to be as close as they would get. The Leafs broke things open in the with three more runs in the fourth inning, and never looked back. Each team left their share of potential runs on base, with La Sierra leaving a total of 11 runners stranded throughout the course of the game.
Three different Golden Eagles players (Brandi Almaraz, Taylor Brooks, and Sorenson) notched two hits in the game.
Megan Dalton pitched the first 3 1/3 innings and was charged with the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits, with four strikeouts and four base-on-balls.
The team will look to rebound this coming Friday, when they are scheduled to host San Diego Christian College. Friday's non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 12pm, with Game 1.
