The Golden Eagles baseball team ended their season by taking two of three games from Marymount University, on the road this past weekend. La Sierra took Friday's single game, 8-7, in extra innings, and followed that win up with a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles won Game 1, 6-3, and lost the finale, 4-9, to close the season out. The team finishes the season with a record of 7-23 in Cal Pac play, and 11-28 overall.
Friday, April 26
La Sierra def Marymount, 8-7 (11 innings)
In the first game of a three-game series, the Golden Eagles were unable to hold onto a late lead, but a single run in the 11thinning was enough to secure the victory in the opening game.
La Sierra jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings. But Marymount cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom half of the 4thinning. The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 4-1 with two runs in the 6th, only to be answered by the Mariners, who scored two runs in their half of the 7th. The back-and-forth continued, with the Golden Eagles pushing another two runs across the plate in the 8thinning, but the Mariner weren't going away quietly as they scored three runs over the final two innings, sending the game into extra's. La Sierra quickly regained the lead with a run in the 10th, only to be matched by the Mariners who scored a run of their own in the bottom of the 10thinning. But La Sierra would not be denied as they scored another run in the 11thto secure the victory.
Art Felix led all players with three hits in the game, to go along with one RBI. Josh Jubile and Kash Mattson also pitched in for the Golden Eagles, with each collecting two hits and two RBI's in the win. Mattson hit one of two La Sierra homeruns, with the other coming off of the bat of Jake Taylor who also finished with two hits in the game. Andrew Lundstrom and Nick Salinas were the other two Golden Eagles players who notched two hits in the game. Pitcher, Jacob Holguin, pitched the final inning to pick up the victory for La Sierra.
The two teams combined for a total of 30 hits in the game, with the Mariners holding a slight 16-14 advantage in that tally. Marymount, however, was unable to overcome four fielding errors in the loss.
Sunday, April 28
La Sierra def Marymount, 6-3
After giving up two runs in the 1stinning, Golden Eagles pitcher, Jacob Bretsch settled in to pitch 7 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits, while striking out five, to pick up the victory. Holguin came in for the final 1 2/3 innings to pick up the save. Alex Ogletree, Lundstrom, Salinas, and Felix each notched two hits in the win and accounted for eight of the team's 11 hits. One of Ogletree's two hits was a homerun, while Mattson hit another homerun in the victory. Tim Mendonca also had a hit and led the team with two RBI's.
Marymount def La Sierra, 9-4
The Golden Eagles were forced to play catch-up in the final game of the season for the baseball team. After La Sierra cut the lead to 2-1, with a run in the 3rdinning, the Mariners outscored the Golden Eagles 7-1 over the next four innings of play.
Mattson was the only Golden Eagles player to have multi-hits, as he finished the day with a 2-for-4 game. He was one of four different players to drive in a run in the season finale.
The Mariners scored their nine runs on an equal number of nine hits. Both teams had their struggles defensively, as they finished with a combine five errors in the game.
