Softball Drops Opening Doubleheader To USK

The women's softball team hosted the University of St. Katherine, in Sunday's opening day action. The Firebirds had four games before heading into the series against the Golden Eagles. The Firebirds faced Marymount the series before, splitting the series with the defending Cal Pac champions. La Sierra came into the series not having played a contest since their fall pre-season match ups.

Game 1

La Sierra - 5; Saint Katherine's – 13 (5 innings)

The Firebirds jumped out to an early lead in game one and would never let it go, putting up 2 runs in the second. The next two innings were a flurry of offense for the Firebirds scoring 9 runs across the 3rd and 4th to take an 11-2 lead. The Firebirds added 2 more in the top of the 5th to go up 13-2, giving La Sierra just a half inning to cut the deficit by at least 4 to prevent the mercy. The Golden Eagles nearly did just that with a 3 run homerun by Kirstin Mullen. Ultimately, the Golden Eagles could not keep the momentum going after the blast by Mullen and ended the game in five innings.

Game 2

La Sierra – 6; Saint Katherine's – 8

La Sierra came back in game two with a vengeance, not wanting to be outdone on their home field. They were on the board early with a run in the first, then the game was a stalemate for the next two and a half innings. Finally, the Golden Eagles burst the game wide open with a 4-run bottom of the 4th, seemingly taking firm control of the game. It was not enough to hold off the Firebirds offense, putting up 7 runs in the top of the 5th to take the lead. Both teams continued to battle in the 6th putting up a run each. Again, the Golden Eagles came up short and fell to the Firebirds.

The softball team will travel to San Diego Christian College this coming Friday afternoon for their first road test of the season. Last year the Golden Eagles ended with a 3-1 record against the Hawks. In the last series that these two teams encountered each other, the Golden Eagles walked away with two wins on the day.
