Redding, Calif. - The Golden Eagles traveled to Simpson University for a four-game series with the Redhawks. The first of two doubleheaders was played on Thursday and although the Golden Eagels offense was strong, they were unable to secure the wins, dropping two to the Redhawks, 6-9 and 11-12 repectively.
Game 1
In the first inning, Simpson University got their offense started when Andre Alvarez doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.
The Redhawks pulled away for good with four runs in the third inning, when Alvarez singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run, followed by Antonio Nobriga's sac fly, which scored another run for the Redhawks and David Miller singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two more runs.
The Golden Eagles tallied three runs in the seventh inning. Justin Wear and Jacob Villegas each had RBIs in the frame.
Jacob Bretsch started the game for Golden Eagles. The pitcher went four and a third innings, allowing six runs on six hits and striking out one. Jake Wear and Jared Dane entered the game as relief, throwing two and two-thirds innings and one inning respectively.
The Golden Eagles racked up seven hits in the game. Justin Wear and Niko Cladopulos each racked up multiple hits for the Golden Eagles.
Game 2
A walk-off left the Golden Eagles on the wrong end of a 12-11 defeat to Simpson University on Thursday. The Redhawks were down 11-10 in the bottom of the ninth inning when Nathan Minami doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs.
Zayne Mauga collected four hits for the Golden Eagles in the defeat. Mauga singled in the third, singled in the fourth, singled in the sixth, and singled in the seventh.
The Redhawks got things moving in the first inning, scoring two runs when Logan Gomes homered.
The Golden Eagles evened things up at two in the top of the third inning when
Justin Wear drew a walk, scoring one run.
The Redhawks scored five runs in the seventh inning, driven by a single by Antonio Nobriga and a home run by Dylan Wilson.
The Golden Eagles socked two home runs on the day.
Ian Chiang had a long ball in the seventh inning and
Niko Cladopulos went for the long ball in the sixth inning.
Next up, the Golden Eagles (4-11) are back in action for today for the final doubleheader of the series with Simpson University.
