RIVERSIDE, Calif.- The California Pacific Conference has named La Sierra's own Anthony Garcia as the men's soccer Player of the Year. Garcia earned himself this honor through his record-breaking season and leadership abilities. The sophomore is a key mid-fielder for the La Sierra team, and has helped bring this team to many victories. Garcia has appeared in all 15 regular season games this year starting in 14 of them. He started in the opening round of the California Pacific Conference Championship Tournament, scoring the winning goal to help his team in a 2-1 victory over Simpson University (Redding, Calif.) to advance them to the semi-finals.
Garcia has had a tremendous year with the Golden Eagles by setting a new school record for goals scored in a single season. The record to beat was 20 goals in a single season, and Garcia fell three short of tying it with 17 his rookie year. Anthony was determined to beat the record this season. Anthony tied and beat the record on October 20 against Cal Maritime with a hat trick. Garcia went on to score 2 more goals in the regular season, bringing the new record to beat to 23 goals in a single season. Garcia also has one goal in the postseason with more to come in the upcoming games.
Garcia was also named Freshman of the Year his freshman season and adds Player of the Year to his continuously impressive career. Over his two years at La Sierra, Garcia has a total of 41 goals, 10 assists, and 92 overall points.
