Softball Home Opener

RIVERSIDE - The La Sierra Softball team kicked off their Home Opener with a double header against Hope International University. The Golden Eagles fell in both games to the Royals with a 0-4 game one score and a 0-8 game two score.

Game 1 vs Hope International, 0-4

The Golden Eagles were held hitless in game one with the Royals ace, Allie Puente recording 20 strikeouts. Danielle Pfennig was the only Golden Eagle to get her bat on the ball with a popout to first base.

Hanna Dobbs was the starting pitcher for La Sierra. After a rocky first inning with the Royals recording two of their four runs, Dobbs was able to lock in for the next three innings with the help of the defense to keep Hope scoreless. Shelbie Debenedetti came in to pitch after the first batter of the fifth inning. Hope was able to pick up their final two runs in fifth. Similar to Dobbs, Shelbie was able to shut down the final batters in the last two innings with the defense to back her up.

Game 2 vs Hope International, 0-8

With a change in the lineup, La Sierra looked to take game two from the Royals. The Golden Eagles were able to see the ball better in game two by improving to only one strikeout in the game.

Hazel Altamirano and Pfennig recorded the Golden Eagles' only knocks. Altamirano had an infield single to shortstop, and Pfennig had a deep fly ball off the center field fence.

The fourth inning started off with a walk to Jaelyn Guiterrez to put a runner on for the Golden Eagles. Siobhan Sandoval executed a sac bunt perfectly to move Guiterrez into scoring position, but Guiterrez was caught stretching to third trying to press her luck. La Sierra ended the inning with a ground out, and no other chances on base to end the game.

Up Next: Golden Eagles travel to University of Redlands Tuesday, February 6 for a single game at 2 pm.
