Men's Soccer Defeat #16 Westcliff to Advance to Championship Match

RIVERSIDE - La Sierra men's soccer advances to the Championship Match of the California Pacific Conference Championship Tournament with a 3-1 victory of #16 Westcliff University.

Mark Rayo and Second Team All Conference Jordy Verde split the three goals amongst the two of them. Rayo scored the first goal of the match to put the Golden Eagles ahead early on. Verde, coming off a hot end of season run, again goes for two goals to push La Sierra to the Championship.

Masaya Nitta in goal for the full 90, held the Warriors to one. The defense on La Sierra's end acted as a wall only allowing their opponents one shot on goal.

Rayo scored the only goal in the first half in the 26th minute of play with his first shot saved by the goalie to come back for him to put it into the net on the second attempt. The Golden Eagles dominated in the first half with five shots to one.

Verde picked up the Golden Eagles second goal and the game winner in the 62nd minute of play. Westcliff applied pressure with a goal of their own in the 74th minute of play. With time running down and La Sierra only with a one goal lead, the intensity of the game improved drastically.

Westcliff committed 21 fouls in the duration of play, and the Golden Eagles were quick to capitalize on them. A yellow card late in the second half on the Warrior's awarded La Sierra a penalty kick. None other than Jordy Verde came up to take the shot. The young freshman had all the control on the field at the moment. Stepping up to the ball, he took his shot finding a place in the goal. Now up by two with less than four minutes to play, the Golden Eagles had the added security they needed for the win.

Men's Soccer now advances to the Championship game on Saturday, November 9 at 6:00 pm at UC Merced. The Golden Eagles are set to face the winner of the Soka University of America and UC Merced match.
