Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles End Road Trip with Win Over Red Hawks, 2-1

MESA, Ariz. - La Sierra men's soccer took on Benedictine University Mesa at their home field Thursday, October 7 for an 8:00 p.m. match.

The Golden Eagles were looking for a win after being shut down for the last three matches after going 3-0 in conference.

La Sierra kept the Red Hawks off the scoresheet for the first half with freshman Abraham Perez making two good saves in goal. Rodrick Promis and Elias Quintanar Macias offered the only shots in the first half from La Sierra. On four corner kicks, the Golden Eagles were unable to convert any to goals. Despite not scoring, La Sierra managed the game well and limited Benedictine to just two shots on target.

The two sides then headed into the halftime break scoreless.

The second half continued with the same intensity as the first half. A header from Carlos Leon in the 65th minute was the Golden Eagles first attempt on goal in the half. A minute later Sean Palena came with a hard shot on goal only to be denied by the Red Hawks goalie. A misplay on the shot allowed the ball to come to the feet of Leon who sent the ball into the new to put La Sierra on the board first. Benedictine answered back one minute later to even the playing field.

With the game back tied,  Leon and Jonathan Arriaga continued their drive to score more with two close attempts in the minutes that followed. Palena draws a foul one yard outside the box in the 74th minute of play, and scores off a banger in the right pocket of the net curving around the Red Hawks wall.

A shot from the Red Hawks offense sent a diving Perez to save the ball from going into the goal. In the final 10 minutes, Benedictine had five corner kicks applying the pressure and showing the defensive strength from La Sierra with Jose Alcala, Damian Jimenez, and Alvaro Romero sending the ball away from the goal.

La Sierra finished the game with 11 shots, 4 on goal, and 4 saves.

La Sierra men's soccer return home on Tuesday, October 14 against SOKA University for a 7:30 p.m. match.
